2. Panel of the exterior of an elegant brownstone. Doc is alighting from a carriage. Maeve is waiting, in expensive clothing. A tough looking type guards the door, looking at Doc suspiciously.
3. Panel of drawing room inside brownstone. Doc and Maeve meet Alain, a 50 year old sea captain with black beard, slightly balding. The drawing room is filled with interesting period characters, all peering at Holliday with interest. Maeve plays the coquette, basking in attention from some of the male members. The reader can see an Inuit shaman, a Quaker, and other interesting sorts among Americans and Europeans in period clothes.
